Suzette Risto

Suzette started her dance career while she was learning how to walk - always hanging around the studio her mom owned. Her mom Suzette Sutherland, taught ballet, tap, jazz, and a bit of ballroom in the town of Grimsby. Dancing was therefore life in the Sutherland household. Recitals every year brought fun, excitement, chaos, costumes, scenery, lighting, and rehearsals all a part of the life to come.

At the age of 15 Suzette started her own baton twirling classes for the town’s recreation department, teaching and training young girls to perform in parades and festivals around the area. Also at this time she was performing with the Hamilton Tigerettes for half time shows for the Tiger Cats football games. The arts were her calling, and after Graduating from Mohawk College with a graphic arts degree, she went on to hold the position of art director for Sears.

Back to dancing, the draw was too strong, but ballroom and latin caught her interest this time. Teaching was the only way she could afford to train with some of Canada, the U.S.A. and England’s top teachers. She was lucky, met Denis and Doreen Murphy and studied with them for 20 years, taking her exams to receive her Fellowship with Canadian dance teachers Association. Later a trip to England for more training and more exams to receive her Licentiate degrees with Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance.

Over her teaching years, Suzette has won many top teacher awards in both Canada and the U.S.A.

Her accomplishments include numerous appearances on Breakfast Television as a dance instructor. TV commentator for Dance Competitions, Chosen Top teacher on TVO’s program all about Ballroom Dance.

Some people have been lucky enough to have participated in her 10 scheduled DANCE CRUISES which have been very popular. 30 to 65 dancers have traveled with her to the west Caribbean, East Caribbean, Panama, Mexican Riviera and Hawaii. On one they asked her to stay and teach as a full time job.
Stay tuned, there will be more cruises to come!

Some of her most popular classes are for seniors. Both LINE DANCING and FIT FOR LIFE have waiting lists to get in.

Suzette is known for her strong technical knowledge for advanced students and fun loving and easy to learn methods with new students.
